What We Are Looking For

The Assistant to the Curators supports the mission of Baylor University by supervising the Armstrong Browning Library & Museum's (ABL's) Belew Scholars' Room and ensuring prompt and efficient service to researchers. The Assistant to the Curators has primary responsibility for managing the Armstrong Browning Library's closed stacks and assists the Curators with routine reference and collection management duties. The Assistant to the Curators reports to the Director of the ABL.

An Associate's degree, one year of relevant experience and an active Christian faith are required. A Bachelor's degree and two years of experience are preferred. A combination of education and experience will be considered in lieu of the required degree.

*Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Required hours: Ability to work consistently Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

What You Will Do
  • Research Services: Supervise Belew Scholars' Room; retrieve, check-out, check-in, and re-shelve all library materials requested for use by in-person researchers; check and file call slips; and maintain records, compiling a monthly statistical report on the use of library materials.
  • Hire, schedule, train, and supervise student assistants who work in the Library Services Center and oversee Library Services Center activities.
  • Answer assigned reference questions; complete approved photocopying and scanning of rare library materials and scan materials requested via Interlibrary Loan
  • Collection Development: Search antiquarian book dealer's catalogs and internet sources (such as abebooks/eBay) for collection-related materials, comparing findings to ABL holdings and notifying the Curators about items of possible interest.
  • Stacks Maintenance: Record temperature and humidity records daily; schedule and oversee monthly cleaning of library stacks and adjacent areas; contribute to stacks shifting projects.
  • Cataloging & Processing: Coordinate sending and receiving ABL materials to Cataloging and Metadata Services; maintain the periodicals received file; check incoming periodicals for Browning-related articles or other information pertaining to ABL collections; process archival collections.
  • Preservation: Assist with physical processing of materials, including making mylar covers, preparing various labels, and identifying appropriate preservation supplies; assist with digitization projects in coordination with Digitization and Digital Preservation Services.
  • This position will be cross-trained in order to fill in for other support staff, when needed, and to assist with special events in the ABL; may also contribute to ABL social media.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned to support Baylor's mission.
  • Ability to comply with university policies.
