THE DEPARTMENT

The primary functions of the Biological Sciences Department are (1) to provide the highest quality and up to date instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels in a broad range of topics in the biological sciences; (2) to advance biological knowledge through research, scholarship, and creative and professional activities; (3) and to serve the university, local, and global communities. The Department serves over 1,200 undergraduate majors and over 90 graduate students. The department faculty is composed of 30 fulltime tenure-track faculty, up to 30 temporary faculty, and approximately 60 Teaching Associates. The Department has 3 full-time administrative support staff and 6 full-time technical staff members who in collaboration with the Department Chair and other faculty carry out the teaching mission of the department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Animal Care - Operations of animal care facilities
  • Oversee maintenance and repair for animal housing rooms, surgery room, and supporting labs and facilities (Buildings 8 and 4A). Maintain signage.
  • Responsible for the care of animals for teaching, research, and outreach.
  • Provide food and water, clean and change cages, and other animal housing structures.
  • Monitor health of all animals in the department's care, quarantine and treat animals as needed, under the guidance of the campus veterinarian.
  • Support courses in animal physiology, zoology, herpetology, foundations of biology, etc. (may include nights & weekends as needed)
  • Install and/or set up newly acquired equipment for use in laboratory and field teaching exercises.
  • Responsible for continuous operations of all ponds associated with the BioTrek rainforest greenhouse.
  • Write protocols, standard operating procedures, and instructions for handling, care, and use of animals. Meet all requirements of the campus Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC), California Fish and Wildlife, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare of the National Institutes of Health, and Los Angeles County Agricultural Commission (LACAC), and other governmental oversight requirements of animal care.
  • Represent Department at semi-annual inspections. Coordinate with faculty, staff, students, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee members, USDA inspectors, veterinarians, facilities management, and outside vendors. Support the animal care program through ACUC committee membership and/or providing facility updates of animal related activities.
  • Train and oversee student assistants, interns, and graduate assistants in animal care.
  • Maintain own training in animal care and use.
  • Operate standard equipment including autoclave, cage washer growth chambers and other support equipment.

Plant Care - Operations of plant facilities
  • Oversee maintenance and repair for greenhouse facilities on the roof of building 8. This includes three major greenhouses, the head house and potting room. Maintain signage.
  • Fertilize, water, pot, prune, propagate and/or collect plant specimens for teaching, research, and outreach.
  • Intermittent use of Department Vehicles for collection and delivery of plants.
  • Support courses in botany, ethnobotany, plant anatomy, plant physiology, California flora, evolution of plants, foundations of biology, etc. (may include nights & weekends as needed).
  • Train and oversee student assistants, interns, and graduate assistants in plant care. Maintain own training in plant care.
  • Operate standard equipment including autoclave and other support equipment.

Outreach - Support department/BioTrek outreach mission
  • Serve as the liaison for university classes, visiting campus dignitaries and groups, and others wishing to tour the vivarium, BioTrek, and greenhouse facilities. Visitors include college students, K-12 students, and the campus community, supporting thousands of visitors per year.
  • Assist with overseeing and training students and student assistants involved in interpretive tours for visiting groups to the vivarium and BioTrek.

Additional course support:
  • Prepare solutions, media, and other materials for laboratory and/or field teaching exercises.
  • Support courses in physiology (cell, human, plant, and animal), zoology, mammalogy, herpetology, ornithology, botany, plant tissue culture, plant ecology, plant anatomy, etc.
  • Install and/or set up newly acquired equipment for use in laboratory and field teaching exercises.

Technical and administrative support:
  • Organize purchasing lists and requisitions for equipment and supplies for plants and animals for regular care, courses, BioTrek, and outreach.
  • Write grant applications for financial support of animal facilities and greenhouses.
  • Prepare and provide records and reports, as needed, to the Department Chair, Dean of the College of Science, Chair of the Animal Care and Use Committee, University Veterinarian, or Institutional Official (Associate Vice President for Research).



QUALIFICATIONS
  • Equivalent to three years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the area to which assigned OR Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area may be substituted for one year of the required experience OR Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

Knowledge of the principles of performing support services; knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques related to the discipline and the curriculum; knowledge of the materials and supplies in the curriculum and the curriculum and their uses. Ability to plan, organize, and schedule activities; ability to operate technical equipment related to the discipline; ability to maintain records; ability to adjust and perform simple maintenance of technical and scientific equipment.



Preferred Qualifications
  • B.S. or M.S. in Biological Sciences, Zoology, Animal Science, Botany, Plant Science, Horticulture, or related field
  • Knowledge of animal facility care as well as animals care and use regulations.
  • Knowledge of horticulture and greenhouse management.
  • Laboratory animal technician certificate from AALAS (American Association for Laboratory Animal Science).
  • Desirable to have experience that includes handling of insects, small laboratory animals (particularly rodents), reptiles and amphibians, and venomous reptiles. If not experienced in these areas, must be willing to learn and become responsible for these animals as needed.
  • Knowledge of local, State, and Federal regulations governing the care and use of animals is desirable (e.g., USDA, OLAW, and California Department of Fish and Game).
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Access or comparable database development tool for the purpose of maintaining inventory lists.
  • Knowledge of, or experience with planning, implementing, and/or conducting outreach activities.

CSU Classification Salary Range

This position is part of the CSUEU Bargaining unit. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $4,180 and maximum $7,254 per month.
